The European Renewable Energy Study - IIBackgroundWorld wide energy demand will double in the next 25 years, releasing ever greater volumes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. It is now categorically established that this will lead to climate change. The consequence is a potential global crisis. Protection of the world's environment is therefore the greatest challenge of the next century. Renewable energy is one solution to this challenge. In 1995, ESD Ltd was commissioned by the ALTENER programme of the European Commission to produce the second in a series of 'European Renewable Energy Studies' - TERES II. ESD examined the range and impact of the use of renewable energy resources in 30 European countries - and across the continent as a whole - over the next 25 years. Uniquely in the history of EC reports to date, the study is not published as a paper based document: it is a single Interactive CD ROM with all contents in four languages (English, German, French and Spanish). This makes the detailed and complex information in TERES II easily accessible and available for a wider readership. The CD is entitled 'Energy for the Future: MEETING the CHALLENGE'. It reviews historical and current renewable energy development. It also offers forecasts of various scenarios for the energy map of Europe, based upon alternative government policies affecting the use of renewable energy resources. The TERES II CD includes an introductory overview in the form of a presentation with commentary. For the less well informed, this is an introduction to the subject at the level of a quality television documentary. Beyond this, the programme contains a host of illustrations showing views and projects across Europe. There are also a large number of charts and graphs which can be manipulated by the user. The complete text of the original TERES II (in the four languages) can be accessed at anytime for those who wish to refer to all or any part of its contents and the user can print out different sections. At any stage, the user may move instantly from one area of interest to another and gain access to explanatory notes or dictionary definitions of any technical terms. The result is a remarkable publication which not only allows the user to gain a broad understanding of the renewable energy technologies themselves, but also to change variables, examine and test hypotheses, to view the economic consequences of their actions and whether to support 'green energy'. The TERES II CD is available in two versions:
