geothermal energy

geothermal energy: energy that is generated by the heat of the earth's own internal temperature. Geothermal energy has been used for thousands of years for heating in baths, houses and communal areas. A major portion of the primary energy used in Iceland, for example, comes from geothermal water (for heating). Geothermal energy is harnessed in many places to generate electricity (e.g., Kenya, New Zealand, Italy, USA, etc.) and is used extensively in many places for greenhouses (e.g., Japan, Bulgaria, etc.). Geothermal energy manifests itself on the earth's surface through hot springs and geysers.
